History

Laurentia – Brazil Vineyards is a boutique winery created by Gilberto and Leonor Schwartsmann in 1996, in their beautiful countryside estate in Barra do Ribeiro, RS, located about 40 km from Porto Alegre. He is a doctor and professor. She is a doctor and historian. Both lived many years in Europe and the United States. During this period, the couple spent much of their leisure time visiting renowned wineries in different regions of the world. Later, back in Brazil, with their children, Guilherme and Laura, they decided to fulfill their dream that was long due: to produce quality winesin their estate.

After much study, scientific research and planning, and with the support of friends and connoisseurs of good wine industry, such as Rivaldo Hormuz, Adolfo Bag, Cleber Andrade and EvaldeFilipon, they decided to study the soil characteristics of their property, the climatic conditions of the region and the most suitable locations for future deployment of the vineyards. Until then, the region of Barra do Ribeiro did not have a clear vocation for the production of fine wines. Therefore, the Schwartsmann family decided to import a variety of red and white wines which were originated from the best European and American producers.

In 1996, Laurentia – Vineyards of Brazil was officially registered. Since then, different species of white and red wines were implanted in the vineyard, targeting to establish the true vocation of the wine region. During the following years, the winery went through various stages of experimentation, in which caring for the vineyards and the optimization of production processes were prioritized. The family’s dream was to produce quality wines, with the use of high technology, but at the same time with an artisanal approach.

In 2005, they began marketing the first products, such as the red wines Montepulciano and Tempranillo, the white Chardonnay and the Brut and Rosé sparkling. More recently, several other types of red and white wines began to be produced, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Merlot and Nebiollo .
